Hello and welcome, my fellow haute petites! If you’re like me, you’re a petite gal with an extra-large appetite for fashion. And when it comes to buying clothes, it’s not easy being small.
The sleeves are too long. The hem hits too low. Excess fabric makes the waist-line all bunchy.
I’ve always been petite – the shortest kid in class, the tiniest person at work, and just about the smallest member of my family.
You’d think it would be a dream to wear a size zero, but as fellow petites can attest, shopping for flattering clothes can be a nightmare. At times, I’ve had to shop in the juniors’ section. And let’s face it, the styles and proportions of teen clothes are just not appropriate for a grown woman. Also, any shopping spree is routinely followed by a costly ritual of alterations. And even then, I’ve found there are limits to the magic of tailoring. Many times, I end up buying pieces that are so cute I simply must have them, only to find myself sacrificing an ideal fit. (“Yes, this dress is supposed to be a little roomy!”)
But over the years, I’ve started to learn which styles enhance my smaller frame, and which brands offer realistic petite-friendly sizing. (Sometimes, even that size zero off the rack is still too big – what’s a girl to do!) I’m learning what tailoring can fix, and what it can’t. It’s a learning process that continues to this day. And I’m sure I’m not alone in this. I’d love to hear from other petite fashionistas like you about your experiences.
No matter what size “petite” you are, or even if you’re not petite, I hope you find inspiration here. My style philosophy embraces fashion of all budget levels. I always say it’s not about the price tag, but about the best fit. And it’s not necessarily about trying to look taller (although that never hurts), but about looking well-proportioned, put-together, and confident.
I truly believe petite women can pull this off more successfully than we get credit for in the media. We may be tiny, but we can be just as elegant as the statuesque models that grace the fashion runways and magazines. We just have to dress our proportions differently. And that’s where it pays off to shop around and find the pieces that work best for us. Since I’m always on that quest to find petite-sized fashion that flatters, I’m looking forward to sharing my discoveries with you.
I’m so excited to start this online fashion journey. Thank you so much for being part of my blog!
- DRESS: Gianni Bini, size XS pictured here. I’ve had some luck with XS-sized dresses in this brand. I have a few in my closet that fit without alterations, including this one. This dress is from a few seasons ago, and I still wear it often. I love how the fabric is just snug enough for a flattering fit. I like it so much that I visit Dillard’s from time to time trying to find this style again, but so far, no luck. I’m glad I picked up an identical blue version when I originally bought this one. (My shopping habit: If something actually fits rights off the rack, I’m so thrilled that I buy it in multiple available colors!)
- SHOES: Stuart Weitzman patent nude pumps, size 5. Is it just me, or does this brand’s sizing run pretty small? (And I rarely say that!) I love these size 5s, but it took a bit of stretching to break them in. This pair is from a few seasons ago, but right now, I’m loving Stuart Weitzman’s current version of these nude patent pumps with a mini-platform – great for an extra boost in height. And the nude color is fantastic for lengthening the look of your legs.
- NECKLACE: Saks Off 5th gold and pink rhinestone necklace. I’ve had this necklace for years; I love longer necklaces that hang like this to create an illusion of elongating and slenderizing the upper body. If you like this style, I’ve found a similar gold necklace here at a discounted Saks Off 5th price.
- EARRINGS: Saks Off 5th Cubic Zirconia studs. Can’t ever go wrong with a little CZ sparkle! Just simple and classic. I can’t stress enough how big a fan I am of Saks Off 5th for their reduced prices. I found a similar non-CZ pair of earrings at an Off 5th discount here.
